When Peter T. opened First Madison Valley Bank in 1965, on Main Street of Ennis, Montana, he waited outside the doors of his single-story bank building, with no indoor plumbing, and shook hands with each patron who entered. He intended for that bank to serve as a hub for the rural Montana community he loved.
In the years that followed, Peter T. grew a thriving family of community banks in Southwest Montana, opening First Boulder Valley Bank branches in Boulder and Montana City, followed by a second First Madison Valley Bank location in West Yellowstone, and ATM locations in several surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, the Main Street Ennis branch moved just across the street into a beautiful, modern facility (with indoor plumbing!) that also serves as corporate headquarters for the bank. The building and grounds are regularly utilized by the Ennis community as a center for events, just as Peter T. wanted.
In 2009, First Boulder Valley Bank and First Madison Valley Bank merged their state banking charters. Then, in 2018, all branches began operation under the unified charter of Madison Valley Bank. A Bozeman branch expanded the Madison Valley Bank family in the summer of 2019, offering a financial hub for bank patrons in the state's fastest growing area.
Through charter changes and business growth, in Peter T.’s years as President of Madison Valley Bank, he was the epitome of living big, to the utmost of one’s potential. He was unafraid to close a major business deal wearing a Hawaiian shirt paired with a western bolo tie. And he knew that vision and opportunity must be paired with integrity and trust. While he did not pass down his unique fashion sense to his children, they did inherit his values and passion for banking. His sons, Tim and Bruce Combs, continue the legacy of our family-owned bank today.
The ethos that Peter T. instilled in Madison Valley Bank on the Main Street of Ennis all those decades ago remains constant. We still believe in the power of genuine personal connection and in helping our customers live big while banking small.
